和歌山県出身。沢井忠夫・沢井一恵の両氏に師事。東京藝術大学音楽学部邦楽科卒業。卒業と同時に皇居内桃華楽堂で御前演奏。平成5年度文化庁芸術研修員。
2008年～2009年ソロコンサート｢SPIRIT OF A TREE～YOKO NISHI KOTO CONCERT～」アメリカツアー（ニューヨーク・ワシントン・シカゴ）、ハンガリー・ドイツツアー（ブダペスト・ベルリン・ケルン・フランクフルト・ミュンヘン）を行い、演奏とインタービューがドイツ主要4都市でラジオ放送される。2010年6月には上海万博にて公演予定。9月～12月にはコロンビア大学客員研究員として赴任予定。
新作初演、復元楽器の演奏、国内外のアーティストとの即興演奏、洋楽器やオーケストラとの共演、他分野の邦楽家や美術家・作家・詩人とのコラボレーション、自作自演等ソロ活動は多岐にわたる。これまでに2枚のソロアルバムをリリース。
根源的な視点から筝を見つめ、自由な発想と感性でさまざまな活動を展開している。

Yoko Nishi
koto player Yoko Nishi graduated from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music and studied koto under the modernist performer-composers Tadao Sawai and Kazue Sawai.Her repertory ranges from traditional pieces to contemporary works by John Cage and Yuji Takahashi,collaborations and improvisations with Western instruments,DJs,poets and artists.
She has performed for international festivals and venues including the Moers Jazz Festival(Germany),Bang on a Can Festival(USA),Transonic2003(Germany),Carnegie Hall,and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
Recently she has performed on restored ancient Japanese instruments at the National Theatre in Tokyo.
